I should make a mastodon instance where people can only toot in Haiku.

Review your todo lists. Is there something you no longer need to do?

“Demanding privacy from surveillance capitalists,” says Zuboff, “or lobbying for an end to commercial surveillance on the internet is like asking old Henry Ford to make each Model T by hand. It’s like asking a giraffe to shorten its neck, or a cow to give up chewing. These demands are existential threats that violate the basic mechanisms of the entity’s survival.”

#introductions Hi folks, I've just recently joined this afternoon, I believe the fediverse is the future of social networking, so I'm glad to be on here.

While I'm here, would anyone know of any good 3d printing instances? Cheers!

If you want to run your own #Mastodon instance but don't want to do techie stuff, you can get fully managed hosting from Masto.Host:

masto.host

They're also on Mastodon at:

@mastohost

You control your instance, they do the behind-the-scenes technical maintenance.

As we approach #WriteFreely v1.0 and I don't see many huge changes ahead, I'm starting on our documentation.

I'm getting the core stuff (like configuration) written in a new repository now. Everything is in plain text / Markdown, which we'll eventually use to generate nice web pages on the official project site.

Contributions are always welcome, as well as suggestions for what we should include!

Does anyone have suggestions for hosted e-mail services? I'm currently looking into ProtonMail and Mailpie (only a client?)

The evening was hectic, and I almost forgot about the #LunarEclipse. I had literally just put my son to bed when I remembered, "The #eclipse!" We went out to see if the sky was clear.

Clouds were rushing across the sky, but for the most part, it was clear, and we had a perfect view of the #moon looking like a dark brown chunk of rock in the sky.

(Then I spent 10 minutes fighting with camera settings while he went back to bed.)

#introductions Hello everyone!

I joined fosstodon because I have enjoyed Linux since #slackware in 1995 and am a firm believer in the benefits of the #opensource model from an #infosec point of view.

I’ve run Linux variants personally and professionally for over 20 years as well as many others. Most of my experience has been from an admin side but over the past 8 years more from the cyber defender aspects.

Other interests are drone videography and all things infosec.

For absolutely no critical reason I'm working on a #gopher client / server written with #ruby and #ncurses. There are tons of solid projects out there, but wanted to learn about the protocol and work more with networking / command line UI design.

The emojis are cute as fuck honestly, but I need to figure out how to get ASCII strings to play nicely with UTF-8

Having lots of fun. For those unfamiliar, gopher is the plaintext net w/o the frills and pomp of HTTP - emphasis on content :P

Found a difference in the plugins installed. One server has the nginx plugin for certbot the other doesn't. Probably explains the different challenge methods used.

certbot 0.23.0-1 differences between two Ubuntu 18.04 servers. 🤔 One is using the soon to be defunct tls-sni-01 challenge. The other is using http-01 challenge.

I shouldn't have to but I can specify the preferred challenge with:

sudo certbot renew --preferred-challenges http

I guess I should wait until after this Tuesday. Supposedly Let's Encrypt is going to disable the TLS-SNI-01 method.

#opensource software became very common. Meanwhile patents are still used to gain more control over our basic needs such as #food.

There's an initative in #germany wanting to change that:

#OpenSourceSeed
👇👊💪
- Fight market concentration in the seed sector
👇❤
- Promote food security through diversity
- Restore crop seeds as #commons
- Seed must be utilised freely
- Use open-source licensing against patents and variety protection

Holy snappin turtles, my ears are frozen! But I went outside and caught this little statue ... monument... sculpture... thingy.. with the morning colours. No editing except in an online editor to up the saturation some. The black blotch at the top is a passing duck!

@hansbauer @brainblasted @mprv I'd classify this as mostly an issue with the window manager, though the browser can make it look even smoother if the window manager lets it.

Now I'm tempted to see if elementary OS has the animation...
