I don't think it makes sense to be ashamed of failure when you are confronted with a trolley problem, and that's what the 2024 election was. Many Americans are (and have been) doing our best to install brakes in the trolley. Our failure, perhaps, was to be too obsessed with which way to flip the switch when flipping the switch could only change who would be crushed.
Putting brakes on the trolley is an act of hope.
