“Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg was charged for a second time on Friday for not leaving a protest near an oil terminal after police ordered her to do so… If convicted again … she could face up to six months in prison.”

If Greta is thrown in prison while oil executives continue to walk free, I sure hope people start burning things down. I mean, burn it all down for all I care at this point. We’re being led by absolute fucking muppets.

@aral in the Netherlands this is a misdemeanour and it’s rare for people to be charged or convicted. Is it that different there?

@sjmulder @aral No it is not. To be sentenced to jail for something like that requires that your actions might have resulted in severe consequences.

She did not follow the orders by the police. If you do not they can arrest you and you will most likely be convicted of the misdemeanor and have to pay a fine.

She did her task by getting attention and could have avoided it by just walking away a few meters. She decided not to. Her choice. Her consequence.

@stadsplanering @sjmulder And what’s the consequence of ignoring the climate crisis?

@aral @stadsplanering sounds similar. But if she was part of a blockade or such then “just walking away a few meters” would defeat the point.

Here the vast majority of protesters arrested during the ongoing daily blockades in The Hague are arrested for this same offence but released without charge because judges tend to not convict or sentence because these are peaceful and orderly protests.

@sjmulder @aral Countries police forces and judicial systems might have a probability of acting differently 🤷
