1. Er zullen *nooit* 200 mensen tegelijk moeten praten.

@vreer Ofwel: Kunnen we niets over zeggen.

Daarbij: vanwege privacyoverwegingen tracken we niets.

* Audio-only verhoogd capaciteit enorm.
* SD ipv HD verhoogd capaciteit met factor 3.
* één firefox gebruiker verlaagd de experience voor iedereen.
* Deelnemers met low-end devices zijn meestal de bottleneck.
* Het aantal gebruikers in andere meetings.

It's great to see people turning to decentralized and self-hosted communication tools at a time when they are more important than ever!

#Prosody installations have doubled since mid-March. We suspect a lot of these are #Jitsi setups, partly fuelled by increasing discomfort with a lack of privacy in centralized commercial services.

Data is from the Debian popcon service, so only represents a small part of the picture (Debian systems that have opted into reporting their package installation and usage data).

With two daughters at school, @alcinnz, you might know how I feel these days.

The worst issue is that many #Italian #teachers have been trained through #GAFAM webinars: people absorb them as #training while it's just #marketing.

Yet there is hope: I'm slowly spreading #Jitsi #selfhosting.

How to use Jitsi Meet, a free and open source Zoom alternative which you can even host yourself if you trust no-one mashable.com/article/how-to-us

VC4ALL boosted

I found out only yesterday that #Jitsi has dropped #GoogleAnalytics from their public instance meet.jit.si/ , which is a great improvement for #privacy ! (They still do analytics, as documented here: jitsi.org/security/ , which is a good read for any Jitsi user.)

@sunweaver @Gina indeed. Videobridge2 is more stable, eventhough it was released only a week ago.

Especially noticable with Firefox. Videobridge2 comes in the -unstable versions.

Make extra sure, however, you don't run both videobridge and videobridge2, that will break stuff severely.

Zoom: You should hire an appropriate package maintainer

@jeroenpraat Jitsi, nor Nextcloud Talk nor Bigbluebutton have E2E encryption either, though.

The main difference is that zoom made us believe they had it: they lied.

But unless you are hosting your own secured jitsi /videobridge server, your security nor privacy is much better than zooms': It really all depends on the hosting of the server. Which, with zoom you cannot change, but with Jitsi you can.

I tried meet.jit.si #jitsi for #VideoConference and it worked without any issues (a bit of latency shifting between video and sound at times, but no big deal). No account needed.

Contrasting with #Zoom where sound was garbled (not to mention the major privacy concerns) and #Skype which also had sound issues (and needed a phone number for account activation SMS).

I think I'll see if I can get my parents to install chromium and try jitsi.

Hi @ton yes, we are running a Jitsi meet instance and we share multiple ones hosted in EU/The Netherlands. Have a look at vc4all.nl

@favstarmafia Not sure if replying via mastodon works.

But here is ours: beeldbellen.vc4all.nl - hosted on transIP, does use google stun servers (still).

@luka Thanks for introducing #JitsiMeet to me. This will help my girlfriend to set up online dance classes.

@hambibleibt Did you find such a list yet?

We're really curious and would love to set it up on our jitsi (and publish as jitsi ansible setups)

VC4ALL boosted

it must be said, that you still can use it, without any google being involved. There're instances that have changed those lines in their installation.

There're some lists where such instances are listed...but don't have a link at hand. If you can't find it, ask me again.

if it's for voice calls I would say go for: mumble.
maybe you like to also check out qtox. (I only tested it with 2 people. worked very well, it's p2p and e2e encrypted)
