John Arnold<p>_The Evening Post_, 14 August 1924:<br> NELSON NEWS<br>…<br> The District Commissioner (Dr. W. D. S. Johnston) has received details of marks gained by the Iron Duke Sea Scouts, Port <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/Nelson" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Nelson</span></a>, in the competition for the best all-round Sea Scout troop in the Dominion, for Lord Jellicoe’s Silver Trident, recently judged by Lieutenant-Commander Tebbs, R.N., whose marks gives the initial honour of winning to the local troop. The maximum possible was 100. Nelson scored 93 points, Auckland 90, Lyttelton 73, Wellington 61, Redcliffs 52.… The smartness of the Nelson troop in the matter of its uniform is a matter for commendation…. The following letter has been received from the Private Secretary to the Governor-General: “… His Excellency's engagements will unfortunately prevent his visiting Nelson until towards the end of September. If, however, the Iron Duke Sea Scout Troop, to which His Excellency renews his hearty congratulations, can defer the acceptance of the trident until that time, His Excellency hopes to be able to present it in person, a privilege which he would highly esteem.'”<br><a href="https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/EP19240814.2.156" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/news</span><span class="invisible">papers/EP19240814.2.156</span></a><br><a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/OnThisDay" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>OnThisDay</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/OTD" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>OTD</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/PapersPast" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>PapersPast</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/SeaScouts" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SeaScouts</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/NewZealand" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>NewZealand</span></a></p>
John Arnold<p>_The Evening Post_, 8 Nov 1923:<br>FLAG FOR THE SEA SCOUTS<br> On Tuesday, at the Mission Hall, Taranaki street, Captain Chudley, chairman of the Navy League, presented to the Rev. Fielden Taylor’s Sea Scouts a Union Jack, a gift from the Wellington Branch of the Navy League. In making the presentation, Captain Chudley impressed upon the boys the significance of the flag, and the great Empire to which they belonged. He drew the boys’ special attention to the wonderful example of sacrifice and service which they had in their padre, the Rev. Fielden Taylor.<br> Mr R. Darroch supplemented the remarks of Captain Chudley by pointing out the religious meaning of the three crosses comprising the flag, and explaining what the three colours stood for.<br> Under the command of the Rev. Feilden Taylor, the Sea Scouts gave an excellent exhibition of marches and physical exercises, and those present marvelled that the busy minister could have accomplished so much in one month.<br><a href="https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/EP19231108.2.118" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/news</span><span class="invisible">papers/EP19231108.2.118</span></a><br><a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/OnThisDay" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>OnThisDay</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/OTD" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>OTD</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/PapersPast" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>PapersPast</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/SeaScouts" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SeaScouts</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/UnionFlag" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>UnionFlag</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/BritishEmpire" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>BritishEmpire</span></a></p>
