Today’s social media status quo isn’t cutting it, so Mozilla is exploring an alternative here on Mastodon. In early 2023, Mozilla will be testing a publicly accessible instance in the Fediverse at Mozilla.Social. We will keep you updated, but for now learn more here: mzl.la/3BNXQMQ

@mozilla welcome! Most mastodon clients require "https://" in front of the link to make it clickable ☺️

@mozilla Great! (Pls edit post to make link work thx)

@mozilla sweet, I'm glad to see Mozilla taking part in the fediverse. Now if they would bring back the phoenix name to something that'd bring me joy haha

@mozilla Welcome to Mastodon! You should consider adding a verified link in your bio so we know this account is legitimate.

@danielhep @mozilla I wish more brands would leverage their well-known brand and domain for this, eg mastodon.mozilla.org. Then there is no question.

@msgbi @mozilla @charles_ex @Ginger149 That would be a big deal. Welch eine Ansage.

@mozilla looking forward to it! I had such a hard time deciding which server to join, one run by Mozilla would have been a clear winner. If this goes well, maybe built-in support for navigating the Fediverse could be a differentiating feature for Firefox?

@KingOfRedLions @mozilla

Be aware that moderation on Mozilla end can get hectic with this much people willing to join. Just my thoughts aloud why decentralization is required today in the first place. :robotok:

@mozilla you know that’s not clickable, right? :(

@mozilla This is great! If this first step is successful linking Firefox identity to Mastodon Accounts and integrating to Pocket could be amazing….

@tchambers @mozilla I imagine that's the plan, given their Matrix instance works only by SSO with your Firefox account.

@mozilla Oh wow! That's great news! We need more companies like Mozilla to host Mastodon!

@mozilla@mastodon.social well, that's ironic... still using a Twitter button? Really?

@chrisvitalos
@mozilla Browsers stealing ideas from Vivaldi (nee Opera) and pretending they thought of them is nothing new lol.

@R0B0_G0D

The mozilla.social project they're going to launch is not their first instance in the Fediverse. ;) They used to have their own instance when the Fediverse was still using the OStatus protocol.

Also, there's no need to phrase it as “stealing ideas”, it's not like one group owns it. The more instances there are, the better for the Fediverse network. Now, if we're going to insist on that “stealing ideas” approach, well, everyone stole the idea from identica. LOL. Which is good.

^_^

@youronlyone
@chrisvitalos @mozilla My often bone-dry sense of humour really suffers online unless I throw winking smileys at it. I assure you, I'm only teasing them. 😊

I'm genuinely pleased to see them here. The more the merrier. Did not know they'd tried before, though. That's useful to know.

@R0B0_G0D

Ahh! Well, you got me there. :D

But, true, it's hard to know without smilies. ^_^

@chrisvitalos @mozilla

@mozilla Love this sentence in the last paragraph, sums up the problem statement well IMHO -

"In private hands our [social media] choice is limited, toxicity is rewarded, rage is called engagement, public trust is corroded, and basic human decency is often an afterthought."

@chrisvitalos @mozilla Where is that found? I would love to read the entire text, if possible.

@cherrysandwich @chrisvitalos @mozilla Oh crap! No wonder... I heard about that blog entry being posted... I probably even boosted it... but never actually read it. LOL

@mozilla This is what we like to see 👍

@mozilla What if Google or Microsoft want to have their own instances. Could big players force the little ones out, take it over and leave us vulnerable to another Musk?

@PeteHall @mozilla yes they could. I could see these companies taking on folks ..

@mozilla @PeteHall That would be like Gmail going rogue. If Google were acquired by a fascist madman, people would just move their email away from gmail to one of the millions of email providers or host their own. If gmail died, email wouldn’t go away. We’d still all be able to email each other without gmail. This is the benefit of the decentralized Fediverse.

@PeteHall

If they are simply joining, nothing much. Look at Facebook, they joined the XMPP/Jabber network for a few years, and eventually left.

What makes the network resilient against takeover, domination, and control, is the protocol. As long as the Fediverse's protocols remain open, and/or a community-project, and/or W3C, it will remain as "free".

The worst that can happen is there will be two different set of interoperability, and only the neutral instances are federating with those two sets. Like how it is in the Matrix network.

@mozilla

@mozilla how will you measure your success? I don't want to see this exciting Mozilla effort fizzle!

@mozilla Great, but can we please have verified links on this profile for validation purposes? Thanks, and looking forward to see what develops ... :)
