I think I'm liking my new method for enhancing very weathered petroglyphs. I'm using the combination drawn and parametric masks in a second Darktable exposure module instance. First I paint in where I want the mask. Then I adjust it using the parametric functions. Then I lighten the faded petoglyphs. What do you think? Does this image look too manipulated or does it look fairly natural?

I think it looks fine, I don't know the original though.
And thank you for posting this kind of stuff, I really appreciate it. It lowers the stress and angst I feel about the world. It's a bit like opening a door to a safe place, a shelter, even if it is for just a moment, because that moment's effect lasts for longer.
